About Waqs

Waqs Milen Loktionov (Милен Локтионов), better known by his alias Waqs, is a prolific breakcore producer born on October 10, 1995, in Moscow, Russia. He started making music in March 2011, and over the years, he has become one of the most influential figures in the breakcore and experimental electronic music scenes. Waqs is widely regarded as having had a monumental, if not the biggest, impact on the depressive breakcore subgenre. Generally known for melodic breakcore and classic IDM-style break manipulation, his music often employs ambient, glitch, jungle, and various other experimental techniques to give his tracks an old-school "braindance" style IDM feel. Waqs has released music under more than 200 aliases.

The style of his debut album, released in 2012 on the MNMN Records label, strikingly resembles the "industrial ambient techno" of early Aphex Twin and the "jungle" tracks of Squarepusher. This album marked the beginning of Waqs' journey into the experimental electronic music scene.

Waqs has heavily influenced the breakcore scene. The rawness of his tracks makes them very easy to sample, and as a result, you can find countless fan remixes of almost any of his tracks. For example, "Readth" (2012) is arguably his most sampled song, with its iconic melody being recognized by almost everyone in the breakcore community. Similarly, "Unhappy Birthday" features well-known vocals that have become a staple in the scene.

Waqs has a unique ability to make raw, simple music sound cool and atmospheric. His tracks often have a charming simplicity at their core, yet they create a distinct style and mood. For instance, his most popular track, "Why as soon as we become so close, we have to say goodbye?", is built around a single melody, a pad, an anime sample, and a bunch of broken breaks. Despite its simplicity, it works perfectly, creating a unique emotional impact that resonates with listeners.

It's remarkable how much one individual can contribute to a music scene with such raw and unpolished sound. Waqs' music, while simple in structure, has a unique charm and atmosphere that has left an indelible mark on the breakcore genre.
